Define Memory
The process of taking something we have observed and converting it into something to be stored and used.
What are the three processes of memory?
Encoding, Storage, Retrieval
What are the three mental representations?
Sensory (visualise, recall sound), Verbal (information stored in words), Motor (swinging a golf club)
What are the three separate stores in the modal model of memory
- Sensory 2. Short term memory 3. Long term memory
What is “Iconic Storage”?
Momentary storage of visual information
What is “Echoic Storage”?
Momentary storage of auditory information
What are the two types of Long Term Memory (LTM)?
Declarative and Procedural
Explain Declarative memory
Memory or facts and events which can be stated or declared
Explain Procedural memory
Memory for ‘How to’ skills or procedures
Explain “Episodic” memory
Memories of specific events, rich in sensory experience
Explain “Semantic” memory
Memory for general knowledge and concepts
Describe the two ways in which people express memory
Explicit memory: Expressed through conscious recollection
Implicit memory: Memory expressed in behaviour which doesn’t require recollection
