Week 8 Flashcards
What is data communications?
Data communications is the transmission of digital data between two or more computers and a computer network or data network
What are networks?
a set of devices connected by media links
What are modern networks primarily used in 3 types of media?
- Metallic wires within cables
- Glass or plastic fibers (fiber-optic cable)
- Wireless transmission
What are the two most common types of network infrastructures? (2)
Local Area Network (LAN)
Wide Area Network (WAN)
What is Local Area Network?
- A network infrastructure that provides access to users and end devices in a small geographical area, eg., home, school, building or campus
What is Wide Area Network?
A network infrastructure that provides access to other networks over a wide geographical area
What are 3 other types of networks?
Metropolitan-area network (MAN)
Wireless LAN (WLAN)
Storage-area network (SAN)
What is a Storage-area network (SAN)?
A network infrastructure designed to support file servers and provide data storage, retrieval, and replication. It involves high-end servers, multiple disk arrays (called blocks), and Fiber Channel interconnection technology
What is a Metropolitan-area network (MAN)?
A network infrastructure that spans a physical area larger than a LAN but smaller than a WAN (e.g., a city). MANs are typically operated by a single entity, such as a large organization
What is a Wireless LAN (WLAN)?
Similar to a LAN but wirelessly interconnects users and endpoints in a small geographical area
What are three transmission modes?
Simplex
Half duplex
Full duplex
What is a simplex transmission mode?
signals transmitted in one direction eg., Television
What is a half-duplex transmission mode?
both stations transmit, but only one at a time eg. police radio
What is a full-duplex transmission mode?
simultaneous transmissions eg. telephone
What is an open systems interconnection (OSI) model?
Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) was an international effort by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) to enable multivendor computer interconnection
