What is a UTI?
Inflammatory response of the urothelium to bacterial invasion. Associated with pyuria and bacteriuria
What is pyuria?
Presence of WBCs in the urine
What is bacteriuria?
Presence of bacteria in the urine
What is significant bacteriuria?
Numbers of bacteria present in voided urine that usually exceeds the numbers generally caused by contamination from the anterior urethra: >10 ^8bacteria/L
What is asymptomatic bacteriuria?
Significant bacteriuria, but without the patient experiencing symptoms usually associated with UTIs
Describe the epidemiology of UTIs in children
Frequency of infection in infants is 1-2%
Most UTIs occurring in infants and young children are asymptomatic and self-limiting
