Week 7 - Respiratory System Flashcards
What is external respiration called?
Pulmonary respiration
Pulmonary respiration functions are?
Ventilation and exchange of O2 and CO2
Internal respiration is called?
Cellular respiration
Cellular respiration function is?
O2 utilisation and CO2 production by the tissues
What are the purposes of the respiratory system?
Gas exchange (O2/CO2) between the environment and the body, and regulation of acid-base balance (eg. exercise)
Function of the lung is?
Means of gas exchange between the external environment and the body
Ventilation is?
The mechanical process of moving air into (inspiration) and out of (expiration) lungs
What is diffusion?
Movement of (O2/CO2) molecules between the lungs and blood at the alveolus
What is one of the first things the respiratory system does?
Warms and humidifies cold air before it gets to the lungs
What does this humidification do?
Prevents desiccation as they are sensitive
What temperature is the air when it reaches the lungs?
37 degrees Celsius
What are the two zones that the air passes through when you breathe?
Conducting zone and respiratory zones
What does the conducting zone do?
Cleans and filters the air so that when it gets to lungs it won’t harm them
What does the conducting zone consist of?
The trachea, bronchial tree and bronchioles
