How did jazz change to Dixieland?
Improvisation.
Rhythm sections kept beat, player could improvise at the proper time. Front line players (clarinet, trumpet, trombone)played together for original statement of tune. The trumpet plying melody, clarinet counter melody above trumpet and trombone a line below trumpet. each 3 would get to improvise their chord.
