Physical Characteristics
What is a bay?
A coastal body of water partially surrounded by land that feeds into a large body of water.
What are biomes?
Communities of living organisms within a region.
What is climate?
The average weather conditions of a place over an extended period of time.
Who is a climatologist?
A person who studies climate.
What defines a desert?
A place where there are fewer than 10 inches of precipitation in a year.
What are droughts?
Long periods of time when an area receives less than average precipitation.
What is a flood?
Occurs when water rises in an area and has no place to go.
What is a gulf?
A deep inlet of water that connects coastal areas to a larger body of water, such as a sea or ocean.
What are landforms?
Natural features that make up the Earth’s surface.
Who is a meteorologist?
A scientist who studies the weather and weather patterns.
What is a mountain?
An area of land that is at least 1,968 feet taller than the land around it.
What is a natural hazard?
A dangerous event in nature such as a hurricane, tornado, wildfire, or earthquake.
What is a natural resource?
Something found in nature that people can use.
What are nonrenewable resources?
Resources that cannot be easily replaced.
What is an ocean?
Large bodies of salt water that cover most of the Earth’s surface.

The natural environment of an area, including landscapes, landforms, plants, climate, and animals.
What is a plain?
A large area of flat land with few to no trees.
What is precipitation?
Water that falls from clouds, such as rain, snow, sleet, or hail.
What are renewable resources?
Resources that can be renewed or replaced.
What is temperature?
Measurement of how hot or cold it is outside.
What are terrestrial biomes?
Biomes that are primarily on land.
What is a thermometer?
A tool used to measure temperature.
What are tornadoes?
Devastating storms with high winds that usually form over land.
What is weather?
Short-term atmospheric conditions in an area or specific location.
What is wind?
Air moving outside.
