Week 6: Sampling distribution Flashcards
With data sets that have a lot more data what do we do?
we work with samples than the entire population.
What are two important concepts we should about the relationship between a population and sample stat?
parameter and a sample statistic
What is a parameter?
its a numerical value that describes a specific characteristic of an entire population
How do we find a parameter
We would have to gather data from entire population which is impractical
If impractical what do we use?
Sample stat which is a sample from the population
What is the primary goal of stats?
To make an informed decision on an unknown population parameter.
From the sample what stats can we calculate, give me examples?
Mean
Sd
Median
What is our primary focus on understanding these properties?
It means to evaluate their reliability of these properties
What is a sample’s sd referred to as?
Standard error
What are two important concepts we should know about the sample mean?
- The mean of the sample distribution had to equal the mean of the population ( µx¯ = µ.)
- standard error = the sqarer root of the sample size ( σx¯ = σ/√n)
