Week 6 - Research Design and Sampling Flashcards
Pseudo-random binary sequences (PRBS)
Use to reduce bias in random sampling
Pretest + posttest
Use same group, baseline first then experiment/control group.
Randomised posttest
Posttest only - no baseline
Matched-pairs design
Match people that are similar and split them into different groups
Repeated-measures designs
Uses same individuals over and over
Statistical matching
Use instead of matched pairs for covariates
Strengths of RCT
- shows significant effect
- low researcher subjectivity
Limitations of RCT
- expensive
- need lots of ppl
- low external validity
Quasi-experimental designs
At least 1 of 3 is missing:
1. random sampling
2. control groups
3. manipulation
Non-RCT
Self-selected
Interrupted time series
Observations - treatment occurs naturally or administered over time
1 group posttest
Limitation = no baseline/control group
History effect
External event biases DV
Maturation effect
Change with time bias
Instrument decay
Gradual loss of measurement accuracy
