On the other hand, algorithms may also help identify undiagnosed forms of discrimination by leading to unexpected outcomes that point to hidden bias in the provided input.

(Mittelstadt et al) What are benefits and what are negative outcomes of algorithms when looking at agency and vulnerability?

A

beneficial to human agency. We can think of personalisation and filtering algorithms and recommendation algorithms that enable easy access to information that is of interest and that can facilitate learning.
These algorithms can also limit the vulnerability of people to be exposed to contents that may be harmful. For example, algorithms on Netflix that display age-appropriate contents may be understood as protecting vulnerable users from harmful content.
On the other hand, Mittelstadt et al. argue that such technologies, particularly those for personalisation, can also undermine people’s autonomy. As personalisation algorithms provide different settings of choice for different individuals, such algorithms not only support but can also manipulate people’s decisions.
Recommendation and filtering can lead to information bubbles and echo chambers.
Even more importantly, profiling and classification algorithms render particular group members more susceptible to detrimental treatment based on an automated analysis of statistic data about their social group (e.g. COMPAS).

Name the influences on agency

A

Agency: ability to act intentionally; to act for a reason or purpose
Today’s lecture points to the problem of information bubbles as failing to provide a diversity of information and potential reasons for action that may be needed to decide one’s actions with sufficient freedom.
If we offload decisional tasks to algorithms, whose mechanisms are not easily understandable for us, we may also diminish our agency in the sense that we act less intentionally if we simply follow the decisions fo algorithms we do not understand.
The relatively autonomous functioning of automated algorithms also raises the question whether discrimination is determined by intention or effect.

A

Vulnerability: condition of being susceptible to suffering harm, as a consequence of embodied, social and relational existence

Today’s lecture showed that one’s vulnerability is also importantly shaped by the  
       beliefs, views, and representations about the social groups to which one belongs. 

These representations are positive for certain groups, but negative for others.
