Week 6/7 Flashcards
Define chemical equations?
Chemical equations are used to describe what is happening in a chemical reaction.
Which side of the arrow are reactants on?
The left hand side
Which side of the arrow are the products on?
The right hand side
State the Law of Conservation of Matter.
Matter cannot be created, nor can it be destroyed. It can only be changed from one form to the other.
What is the rule of chemical equations?
The mass of the reactants must equal the mass of the products.
Steps for writing chemical equations?
- Write it out in words
- Write it out in symbols
- Balance the equation
- Write the states
What are the 4 states of matter?
Solid (s)
Liquid (l)
Gas (g)
Aqueous (Can be dissolved in water) (Aq)
Define chemical reaction?
A process that leads to the transformation of one set of chemical substances to another.
The 5 categories that reactions belong in.
Decomposition reactions Thermal decomposition reactions Combination reactions Precipitation reactions Redox reactions
Define decomposition reactions?
A chemical reaction where a substance breaks down into simpler substances.
General equation for a decomposition reaction?
AB → A + B
Define thermal decomposition reactions
A chemical reaction where a substance breaks down into simpler substances while being heated.
General equation for a thermal decomposition reaction?
Heat
AB → A + B
Define combination reactions?
When two substances react to form a third new substance.
General equation for a combination reaction?
A + B → AB
