Define concurrent disorders
What is the role of predisposing factors in suicide?
Examples of predisposing factors are: male, LGBTQ, not married, depression/other mental health concern, prior attempt)
What are some examples of precipitating factors to suicide?
Break up, crisis, loss, substance use
What are some of the protective factors to suicide?
Safety, supportive family, friends, future plans, asking for help
What is the most important factors in suicide risk assessment?
What suicidal thoughts, language, and plans are present? Is there intent, a specific plan, or access to means?
Some specific questions to ask in suicide risk assessment are:
Have you ever felt that you would be better off dead?
Have you every felt so bad you thought you would like to go to sleep and never wake up?
Have you ever thought that you are a burden and that your friends and family would be better off without you?
What are the prevalence rates for 2 common disorders?
1) anxiety disorder-10 to 25 per cent of all people will have an anxiety disorder in their lifetime. Among people who have had an anxiety disorder in their lifetime, 24 per cent will have a substance use disorder in their lifetime
2) major depression-15 to 20 per cent of people will have a major depression
Among those who’ve had major depression, 27 per cent will have a substance use disorder in their lifetime

What does the consultation treatment option quadrant involve and who is it for?
- milder substance use and mental health problems
- treatment in community, possibly by family doctor or therapist
