Week 5- Spinal cord, spinal nerves Flashcards
Label the parts of the vertebrae
And list the roles of the different parts
Vertebral body: Weight bearing part
Vertebral Arch —>
Vertebral foreamina: Forms Vertebral Canal when all vertebrae together. Contains and protects spinal cord
Pedicle: Joins vertebral body to arch
Lamina: Bone that extends from pedicle and joins at midline forming
vertebral arch roof
Spinous Process: Entends posteroinferiorly from lamina. Point of attachment for muscle and ligaments
Transverse Process: Entends posterolaterally. Point of articulation for ribs in thoracic region
Articular Facets- Inferior & superior: Articulate with the respective inferior and superior articular processes of vertebrae above and below forming facet joints
What does the change in the vertebral foramen reflect?
Amount of nueral tissue
Which region is this vertebrae from?
Label the parts
Discuss the Features
Cervical
Body: Short and square. Concave surface superiorly & convex shape inferiorly.
Transverse Processes: Foramen Transversarium
Spinous Process: Bifid
Vertebral Foramen: Triangular
Which region is this vertebrae from?
Label the parts
Discuss the Features
Thoracic
Vertebral Body: Demifacets (inferior & superior) for articulation with rib head
Transverse Process: Facets for articulation with rib tubercle
Spinous Process gets longer
Vertebral body gets smaller
Which region is this vertebrae from?
Label the parts
Discuss the Features
Lumbar
Body: Cylindrical
Vertebral Foramen: Triangular shape
Which region is this vertebrae from?
Label the parts
Discuss the Features
Sacral
Fused Sacral vertebrae
Posterior and Anterior surface: 4 pairs of forarmia to allow passage of S1-S4
L Shape facets on lateral surface for articulation with pelvic bone
Traingular shape: apex points inferiority
Concave anteriorly
Convex posteriorly
Cervical spinal nerves exit ____ their correspondingly numbered vertebrae
Cervical spinal nerves exit above their correspondingly numbered vertebrae
What do spinal nerves exit through?
What are the boarders of the exit points?
What happens if the boarders of the exit points have pathology?
Intervertebral Foramen spinal nerve exit
If pathology affecting the below can compress the nerve
Anterior: IV Disc
Posterior: Articular Processes of Vertebral arch & their associated joint
Inferiorly & Superiorly: Adjacent p**edicle notches
What type of nerves do spinal nerves contain?
Mixed!
Somatic sensory & motor
Visceral sensory
Autonomic nerves (motor) T1-L2 & S2-S4
