Week 5 - ROM Assessment Flashcards

1
Q

Key principles of measuring AROM

A

STANDARDISE

  • patient position
  • landmarks
  • equipment
  • force/effort & instructions (p1/p2/r1/r2) or (move as far as poss. until onset of pain)

Q

Measurement:

A
  • More movement should indicate more + (i.e. sh’ flx. or hyperextension)
  • Reduced movement often more - (i.e. loss of extension)

Q

IMT’s:

A

Sub-max isometric contraction of a muscle against appropriate resistance
- Stabilise proximal segment
- for 2 joint : 1 muscle must be off stretch
- Pain provocation test, NOT A STRENGTH TEST
Strong contractions compress joints & stress ligaments

Q

Using a goniometer:

A
  • Mark the axis of rotation & distal landmarks to assist positioning device
  • Centre the protractor component on the axis of joint rotation
  • Stationary arm is positioned in line w/ the proximal bone.
  • Moving arm is in line w/ the distal/moving bone.
