Week 5 (Other types of Bonds) Flashcards

1
Q

Bond rotations, of single and double bonds carbon bonds

(Newman projections)

A

The energy required to rotate a carbon-carbon single bond is
relatively low and so this does occur at normal temperatures.

There
is a much, much higher energy to rotate a carbon-carbon double
bond, and this does not occur.

However, there are
different energies
associated with
different rotational
conformations

Newman projections
allow us to visualise
the conformation of
the molecule from
front to back.

Q

Categorising groups of atoms as functional groups is useful
because…

A

their chemistry is similar in different molecules.
