Week 5 - Music and Canadian Nationalism Flashcards
What is the CRTC
CRTC: Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission (1968)
What is CanCon
A controversial ruling that compels Canadian broadcasters to devote a certain percentage to air time to Canadian artists
the amount varies depending upon the broadcaster (CBC does more) and time of day
(in prime time, there are different expectations than during the day)
Objectives of the CRTC and CanCon
1) Cultural: to encourage increased exposure of Canadian musicians, lyricists, and
composers
2) Industrial: to strengthen to Canadian music industry
What is Canadian?
What is MAPL
M (music): the music is composed entirely by a Canadian
A (artist): the music or the lyrics my be performed principally by a Canadian
P (performance): either recorded wholly in Canada if it is a live performance
L (lyrics): the lyrics are written entirely by a Canadian
What was the Bryan Adams controversy about MAPL
recorded the song mainly in England, some recording was done in Canada but not enough to qualify for “P”. he also collaborated with a producer in England, they were both credited as composers, so it didn’t qualify for “M” or “L”. only the artist (Adams) was Canadian if one composer had written the lyrics and the other the music, it would have qualified but as is, it didn’t
Who was deemed “Canada’s Band”
The Tragically Hip
How did nationalism get tied up with bands like the Hip
benefit concerts: to raise money and/or awareness but it isn’t politically neutral…
Live 8: in July, 2005 in nine concerts around the world

The Barrie Concert
Covered on CTV network, look at the lineup for the day
older and more marginal world music early in the concert but not at the beginning
concert order is important: start and end with a bang, the most “important” artists
