Benzodiazepines
BOXED WARNING:
- Benzodiazepines + opioids may result in profound sedation, respiratory depression, coma, and death
- Abuse, misuse, and addiction
- Dependence and withdrawal reactions (seizure risk)
Opioids
Opioids + Analgesic Nonopioids
BOXED WARNING:
- Addiction, abuse, and misuse
- Life-threatening respiratory depression
- Neonatal opioid withdrawal syndrome if used during pregnancy
- Accidental ingestion by children —-> fatal overdose
- Risks from concomitant use with benzodiazepines/CNS depressants —> sedation, respiratory depression, coma/death
- Risk of medication errors —-> dosing errors
- Hepatotoxicity in acetaminophen containing products if taking > 4 grams acetaminophen/day
- Life-threatening QT prolongation with methadone
- MAOIs (monoamine oxidase inhibitors) + meperidine —> coma, severe respiratory depression, cyanosis, and hypotension
- Codeine contraindicated in patients < 12 years of age and patients < 18 years of age following tonsillectomy/adenoidectomy —> life-threatening respiratory depression

- Benzodiazepine reversal may result in seizures; seizures may occur more frequently in patients on benzodiazepines long-term
