WEEK 5 - Gendered Violence in 2SLGBTQ+ Flashcards
Whiteness Defined
Socially constructed category - not having colour
> creates power and is perceived to have higher status
Whiteness is the norm, a universal ideal
> not talked about, leads people to change and adapt to the norms of white culture
Hold material implications
> enables white bodies to navigate the world without fear
If white, need to acknowledge its advantages
People do no use your colour against you
Privilege Defined
People have power systematically without earning or doing anything
> ex. travelling without looking up where safe
You either have It and that is how it is or you sustain a system that uses it
4 Ways to Think about Privilege
- Relational - ‘I am privileged, which means someone around me is not’
- Epistemic - people have the power to be heard, some communities have the power to say what is knowledge and truth, research and what is said is controlled by men
- Institutional - rules, regulations, policies, and mandates produce privilege, ex. to work in parliament, need to understand the inner workings and gave resources to get there
- Productive - make people think how it reproduces system of reproduction, has more funding than others, who is chosen?
Representational Means
The leadership has been by white organizations and activist
A lot of funds to stop homophobia went towards white mainstream organizations, excluded minority communities
Resource Distribution
Manifests through mechanisms that are unequal
Power distribution
Through unwritten rules and norms
Universal means specific - smaller organizations need to fight twice as hard to be acknowledged
Professional vs. unprofessional - more prof. = more funding
No space for POC to be heard or for needs to be met
> no decisions making instances for them
> may take part in the process to look like inclusion but do not have a big say in how things turn out
