Compliant
A person contacted by an officer who acknowledges direction or lawful orders given and offers no resistance.
Obstructive resistance
When a subject is uncooperative and is not complying with an officer’s lawful commands, but any resistive actions are not directed at harming the officer or others.
Assaultive resistance
When a subject demonstrates an intent to do harm which presents an imminent threat to the officer, others, or themselves.
Life threatening resistance
When a subject’s resistance or actions are likely to cause substantial bodily harm or death to the officer or others.
Low level force
A level of control which is neither likely nor intended to cause injury and balances against a subject who is displaying compliance or obstructive resistance.
Intermediate force
A level of force greater than low-level force which had potential to cause reasonable injury or substantial pain and balances against a subject displaying assaultive resistance.
Deadly force
Deadly force is that a degree of force which is likely to result in death or substantial bodily harm and balances against a subject whose actions are life-threatening. Deadly force is a measure to be employed in only the most extreme circumstances and is only authorized when a subject displays life-threatening resistance and all four elements of deadly force exist simultaneously.
Imminent threat
Based on the totality of the circumstances, an impending violent act, harm, or resistance that an officer reasonably believes will occur if not immediately confronted or addressed.
