What are the risk factors for PID?
Sexually active
Aged under 15-24
Recent partner change
Intercourse without barrier contraceptive protection
History of STIs
Personal history of pelvic inflammatory disease
Instrumentation of cervix e.g. gynae surgery, IUS implantation or termination of pregnancy
What are the features of PID?
lower abdominal pain
fever
deep dyspareunia
dysuria and menstrual irregularities may occur
vaginal or cervical discharge
cervical excitation
What is first line management for PID?
first-line: stat IM ceftriaxone + followed by 14 days of oral doxycycline + oral metronidazole
What are the complications seen due to PID?
perihepatitis (Fitz-Hugh Curtis Syndrome)
occurs in around 10% of cases
it is characterised by right upper quadrant pain and may be confused with cholecystitis
infertility - the risk may be as high as 10-20% after a single episode
chronic pelvic pain
ectopic pregnancy
