Week 5 Flashcards
Eye trauma classifications
Closed (contusion or lamellar laceration) or open (rupture or laceration - penetrating, perforating, or intraocular foreign body)
Closed globe injuries
Blunt trauma to eye with corneal-scleral wall intact
Contusion (eye trauma)
Closed injury due to blunt trauma, damage can be present at site or distant
Lamellar laceration (eye trauma)
Partial thickness wound caused by sharp object
Open injury (eye trauma)
Involves a full thickness wound of cornel-scleral wall
Rupture (eye trauma)
Full thickness wound caused by blunt force (observed at weakest point of the globe - not always at site of injury)
Laceration (eye trauma)
Full thickness injury wound caused by sharp object at site of impact
Penetration (eye trauma)
Single full thickness injury usually caused by sharp object without an exit wound
Perforation (eye trauma)
Two full thickness wounds originating from entry and exit of missile
