A

physical damage to body tissues caused by a difference in pressure b/w an air space inside or beside the body + the surrounding fluid (i.e. scuba diving, air cabin pressure causing ear barotrauma during flights)

A
  • abnormal softening or loss of consistency or contiguity in organs or tissue
  • used to refer to a bone that’s supposed to be hard but is actually soft
  • rickets/vitamin D deficiency can cause malacia (bow legs are an indicator of childhood vit D deficiency)
  • antonym = scelosis (hardening)

“malakos” = soft

A

medical removal of infelcted, dead, or damaged tissue to improve healing potential of remaining healthy tissue (e.g. removal of adhesions)

"de" = to take
"bride" = adhesions formed after surgery (bridle is restricting equipment used to direct a horse)

akinetic

A
  • affected w/ akinesia, which is a loss of control or impaired motor function (common consequence of Parkinson’s)
  • unlike apraxia, where you can still make movements but it’s uncoordinated, akinetic refers to damage to nervious system, which means you can’t make a movement (aka total loss of movement)

hemineglect

A
  • condition due to brain injury where patient is only aware of one side of body + completely ignores the other side (most common is left visual hemineglect, caused by damage to the right parietal lobe of the brain)
  • AKA hemispatial neglect, unilateral spatial neglect, or unilateral inattention
  • a person with hemineglect may draw a clock with with only the numbers 12 through 6
