Week 4 part 3 Flashcards
1
Q
What is a metallic bond?
A
- The electrons in the outer shell of the metal are delocalised. There are strong electrostatic forces between the positive metal ions and the shared negative electrons.
2
Q
Why are most metals solids at room temperature?
A
- The strong electrostatic forces between the electrons and metal ions needs lots of energy to break.
3
Q
Why are metals good at conducting heat and electricity?
A
- The delocalised electrons carry heat and electricity throughout the metal
4
Q
Why are metals malleable?
A
- Because the layers can slide over each other
5
Q
Why are alloys harder then pure metals?
A
- Because when a metal is mixed with another metal, the elements have different sized atoms so it is harder for the layers to slide over each other.
