Week 4 part 3 Flashcards

1
Q

What is a metallic bond?

A
  • The electrons in the outer shell of the metal are delocalised. There are strong electrostatic forces between the positive metal ions and the shared negative electrons.

Q

Why are most metals solids at room temperature?

A
  • The strong electrostatic forces between the electrons and metal ions needs lots of energy to break.

Q

Why are alloys harder then pure metals?

A
  • Because when a metal is mixed with another metal, the elements have different sized atoms so it is harder for the layers to slide over each other.
