Week 4 Muscles Breakdown Flashcards
Origin of Diaphragm
Internal surface of ribs 7-12 and their costal cartilage, internal surface of the xiphoid process of the sternum, and anterior vertebral bodies of L1-L3
Insertion of Diaphragm
Central tendon (dome) of the diaphragm
Action of Diaphragm
Expands the thoracic cavity when abdominal breathing
Origin of External Intercostals
Inferior boarder of one rib
Insertion of External Intercostals
Superior boarder of the rib directly inferior
Action of External Intercostals
Elevates the ribs at the sternocostal and costospinal joints (to assist with inhalation)
Origin of Internal Intercostals
Superior boarder of one rib (and its costal cartilage)
Insertion of Internal Intercostals
Inferior boarder of the rib (and its costal cartilage) directly superior
Action of Internal Intercostals
Depresses ribs at the sternocostal and costospinal joints (to assist with exhalation)
Origin of Serratus Posterior Superior
Inferior ligamentum nuchae and spinous processes of C7-T3
Insertion of Serratus Posterior Superior
Superior, external surfaces of ribs 2-5
Origin of Serratus Posterior Inferior
Spinous processes of T11-L3
Insertion of Serratus Posterior Inferior
Inferior. external surfaces of ribs 9-12
Action of Serratus Posterior Inferior
Depress ribs 9-12 (in exhalation) at the sternocostal and costospinal joints
Action of Serratus Posterior Superior
Elevate ribs 2-5 (during inhalation) at the sternocostal and costospinal joints
