C- Anterior aspect of thighs
D- Scapular area
E- Upper dorsogluteal

17
Q

Insulin is injected subcutaneously, where is it most quickly absorbed?

A

Abdomen or back of arm

A

Abdomen or back of arm

18
Q

How do you aspirate when using two viles? (mixing medications)

A

Aspirate a volume of air equivalent to first medications dose. Inject act into vial A insuring needl edoes not touch solution. Withdraw needle and aspirate a volume of air equivalent to second medication’s dose. Inject air into vial B. Withdraw med from vial B into syrgine then insert needle back into vial A and withdraw correct amount of med there.

19
Q

What are the four types of insulin?

A

Rapid acting, short acting, intermediate acting or long acting

20
Q

What is the only type of insulin that can be given IV?

A

Short (Regular) acting

21
Q

When mixing medicaitions from a vial and ampule, what medication do you prepare first?

A

Vial.
- Then you withdraw med from ampule using same syringe

22
Q

When mixing two insulins, what one should you prepare first?

A

Prepare short or rapid acting insulin first to prevent it from being contamined with longer acting insulin

22
Q

When mixing two insulins, what one should you prepare first?

A

Prepare short or rapid acting insulin first to prevent it from being contamined with longer acting insulin

23
Q

What are the 2 types of insulin pens?

A

Prefilled and reusable
- Reusable it most typically used

- Reusable it most typically used

25
Q

Common gauge sizes for insulin needles?

A

29 to 32

26
Q

Insulin pen errors

A
  • Failing to check expiry date
  • Dialing back to zero
  • Not pushing dial hard enough
  • Removing needle as soon as dial hits zero
  • Shaking pen to mix insulin
  • Not priming new pen needle
  • Failing to remove both caps on needle of pen
27
Q

Because of the sciatic nerve location, the _____ muscle is NOT recommended as an injection site

A

Dorsogluteal
-Pt. may experience paralysis of leg if nerve is hit

28
Q

Gauge and size of needle for deltoid site?

A

23-38. 5/8 to 1 inch needle

29
Q

How would you locate the ventrogluteal muscle?

A

Patient lie either supine or lateral position, place heel of hand over greater trochancter of patient’s hip with wrist perpendicular to femuar

30
Q

Why is the Z track method used for medication administrations?

A
  • Used for pulling skin during IM injections where prevents leakage of medication into subcutaneous tissue, sealing the medication in the muscle and minimizes irritation
31
Q

How far should you pull skin for Z-track method? How long do you keep the needle in after med is injected?

A

2.5-3.5 cm (1 or so inches)
10 seconds

32
Q
