Week 4 : HIV and Vertical Transmission Flashcards
What type of virus is HIV?
A retrovirus.
What is HIV’s genetic material?
A single strand of RNA
What type of cells does HIV infect?
Proteins allow HIV to directly bind to CD4 receptor and infect T helper cells.
What does ART stand for?
Antiretroviral therapy.
What does ART do?
It cannot cure HIV but suppresses the virus and slows progression of disease.
What is the 95-95-95 target?
That 95% of people are aware of their HIV status, that 95% are on HIV treatment and that 95% are virally surpressed.
What is the most important risk factor for vertical transmission?
Maternal viral load.
In what ways does antiretrovirals reduce VT?
- Diminish maternal plasma viral load to undetectable levels
- In the long term, also decrease the size of the HIV cell reservoir
- Decrease HIV induced inflammation, in the placenta in particular
- Help restore maternal immunity and general health
What does POCT stand for?
Point of Care Test
