Week 4- Energy storage (carbohydrates and lipids) Flashcards
1
Q
Major site of gluconeogenesis
A
Liver (kidney cortex can also produce glucose in starvation)
2
Q
Possible substrates for gluconeogenesis
A
- Lactate
- Pyruvate
- Glycerol
- Essential and non-essential amino acids whose metabolism involves pyruvate or intermediates of the TCA cycle
3
Q
Major features of glycogen storage diseases
A
- Increased or decreased amounts of glycogen which may cause:
- Tissue damage if excessive storage
- Fasting hypoglycaemia (low blood glucose)
- Poor exercise tolerance - Glycogen structure may be abnormal
- Usually liver and/or muscle are affected
