week 4 anatomy 1-4 Flashcards
What are the anatomical boundaries of the axilla?
- apex 2. base 3. anterior wall 4. posterior wall 5. medial wall 6. lateral wall
What defines the apex of axilla?
cervico-axillary canal; -Passageway between the neck and axilla bounded by the 1st rib, clavicle, and superior edge of scapula
What defines base of axilla?
Bounded by the anterior and posterior axillary folds, the thoracic wall, and medial aspect of the arm. - It is formed by the concave skin, subcutaneous tissue and deep axillary fascia extending from the arm to the thoracic wall forming the axillary fossa (armpit).
What defines the anterior wall of axilla?
Formed by pectoralis major and minor and the pectoral and clavicopectoral fascia associated with them. The anterior axillary fold is the inferior most portion of the wall that may be grasped by the fingers, formed by the pectoralis major as it bridges the from the thoracic wall to the humerus.
What defines the posterior wall of axilla?
ormed chiefly by scapula and subscapularis on its anterior surface and inferiorly by teres major and latissimus dorsi. Posterior axillary fold is the inferior most portion of the posterior wall that may be grasped. It extends further inferiorly than the anterior wall and is formed by latissimus dorsi, teres major and overlying integument.
What defines the medial wall of axilla?
formed by the thoracic wall (1st-4th ribs and intercostal muscles) and the overlying serratus anterior
What defines the lateral wall of axilla?
narrow bony wall formed by the intertubercular sulcus in the humerus
What is an OMT technique that acts on the axilla?
Pectoral traction
What is pectoral traction?
Grasp the patient’s anterior axillary fold with both hands to engage the pectoralis major and minor muscles
What does pectoral traction do?
stretches the muscles and deep fascia of the axillary space
How do the branches of the axillary artery work?
3 segments: 1st segment has 1 branch ; 2nd segment has 2 branches ; 3rd segment has 3 branches ; She tastes like sweet apple pie ; screw the lawyer save a patient
What is the branch of 1st segment of axillary artery?
1.Superior (or Supereme) thoracic artery (Screw)
What are the branches of 2nd segment of axillary artery?
- Thoracoacromial artery and 2. lateral thoracic artert (The Lawyer)
What are the branches of 3rd segment of axillary artery?
- Subscapular artery 2. Anterior circumflex humeral 3. posterior circumflex humeral (Save A Patient)
What are the borders of 1st segment of axillary artery?
located between lateral border of first rib and medial border of pectoralis minor
