Week 4 Flashcards
An infectious, inflammatory disease caused by mycobacterium tuberculosis, usually involving the lungs
Tuberculosis
A progressive and irreversible condition characterised by diminished respiratory capacity of the lungs
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
A collection of clear fluid (transudate) in the cavity
Pleural effusion
An inflammation of the pleura, often associated with the formation of an exudate and fluid filing the pleural cavity
Pleuritis
Air in the thoracic cavity
Pneumothorax
Recurrent allergic pulmonary disease marked by bronchospasm, wheezing, and excessive mucus formation, often, but not always, caused by hypersensitivity to inhalation of antigens
Asthma
An inflammatory form of interstitial pneumonia that results from an immunologic reaction in a hypersensitive person
Hypersensitivity pneumonitis
A bacterial, viral or fungal infection of the lungs
Pneumonia
A localised supportive form of pneumonia associated with cavitation as a result of the destruction of the inflamed lung parenchyma
Lung abscess
A reduction of oxygen supply to the tissues
Hypoxia
A chronic lung disease characterised by a loss of pulmonary parenchyma, resulting in widening of the terminal respiratory space and consequent shortness of breath and reduced ventilatory capacity
Emphysema
Excessive production of tracheobronchial mucus causing cough and expectoration for at least 3 months during 2 consecutive years
Chronic bronchitis
