Week 4 Flashcards
When it comes to the study of the nature of God in westernized theology, which of the following tends to be the primary emphasis? (according to your professor and based upon the observation of many theologians today)
That God controls all things, and has planned everything out and will in no way change his mind - believers must simply learn how to prayerfully align themselves with the predetermined will of God.
In class we discussed the theme of prayer in Luke’s Gospel, and the importance of the Greek word ἀναίδειαν* (anaideian - an-ah’-ee-die-ah’). What does that word mean?
Shameless, audacious boldness (with the application idea of praying in this manner when facing trouble in life, all while retaining a stance of humility and submission before God).
When relying upon reliable biographical information on John as a person, which of the following are true?
(All of the above, except D, F, and H.)
A. Likely the youngest disciple.
B. A part of Jesus’ inner circle.
C. Author of the Gospel of John, 1, 2 & 3 John, and Revelation.
>D. Likely the eldest disciple.
E. Escaped death during the outbreak of persecution against Christians but was banished to an island.
>F. Died early on during the persecution against Christians, becoming one of the first martyrs for Christ.
G. Emphasizes eternal life through believing in Jesus, as a primary or main theme.
>H. Emphasizes holy behavior and right living in practical, everyday life, as a primary or main theme.
John 1:1-14 neatly introduces what is later expounded upon the remainder of John’s Gospel. What are some of the main ideas that John introduces in this section?
{All of the above.}
A. The Cosmic Christ
B. The Incarnation of Christ (The Cosmic Christ took on flesh)
C. The conflict between Light and Darkness
D. The saving effect of believing in the Light that came; that we become children of God through belief in the Son.
John’s Gospel presents a metaphorical background of conflict between light and darkness. What is the primary way this conflict shows up in the record of events it contains?
By the way that people responded to Jesus – they either believe in him, or have unbelief.
The Incarnation of Christ (God taking flesh and dwelling among us) reveals to us:
{Both of the above.}
That God took on weakness and became vulnerable, even to death, identifying with our needy state.
That human life is sacred, and truly made in the image and likeness of God.

In John 20 we have a post-resurrection account of an intimate encounter between Jesus and his anxious disciples. In that account Jesus imparts the Holy Spirit to them in a special way, to release/send them back into mission and to empower them along their way to the Day of Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit would birth the church and come in power upon the believers. Both John and Jesus “speak” in John 20:22, with John describing the moment and then giving us the actual words of Jesus. What metaphor best describes what is happening with the giving of the Holy Spirit in that verse?
Breath/Wind
Jesus often used metaphors to illustrate his teaching, comparing something from the natural world, or our interaction with it, to a strong point of emphasis that he wanted to make. During class we discussed one of these metaphors that comes to us in the Gospel of Luke, chapter 5. Which of the following did we discuss?
Salvation and the mission of Christ-followers likened to the work of fishing.
