Week 4 Flashcards
Define the parasympathetic division
vegetative state; relaxed
Define the sympathetic division
Emergency system that activates when there is a threat; think flight or fight
What are some factors of the parasympathetic division?
Pupils are constricted, salivation occurs, respiration decreases, decreased heart rate, bladder constricted
What are some factors of the sympathetic division?
Pupils dillated, salivation inhibited, respiration increased, increased heart rate, secretion of adrenal hormones, increased secretian of sweat glands, goose bumps, bladder relaxed
What is the main role of the CNS?
Controls the brain and spinal cord. Sends out orders to different parts of the body. Controls bodily functions, processes, neural messages.
What are the 4 aspects of the hindbrain?
Medulla, cerebellum, reticular formation, pons
What are the 2 aspects of the midbrain?
Tectum, tegmentum
What are the 3 aspects of the other Non-cortical structures?
Hypothalamus, thalamus, basal ganglia
What are the 3 aspects of the limbic system?
Septal area, amygdala, hippo-campus
Describe the phinease gage incident
Suffered frontal lobe damage that affected his personality. He become rude, childish and was unable to plan ahead.
What are the 2 hemispherical processes?
Left: Analytical Right: Univeral
What are the sex differences in lateralisation?
Females: Better at verbal fluency, perceptual speed and manual skills
Male: Better at mathematical ability and spacial processing
Define the medulla
Extension of spinal cord. Heart beat, circulation, respiration
Define the cerebellum
Memory, movement, sensory recognition
Define the reticular formation
Neurons, Arousal and consciousness
Define the pons
Links medulla and cerebellum with upper brain stem
Define the tectum
Turning to visual and auditory stumuli
Define the tegmentum
Mood and arousal
Define hypothalamus
Eating, sleeping, sexual activity, emotional experiences
Define thalamus
Processes incoming sensory info and takes it to higher brain areas
Define basal ganglia
Controls movement. Automatic responses and judgements
Define septal area
Nuclei involved in pleasure, pain relief and emotional learning.
Define amygdala
Leaning and remembering emotional events. Recognises fear
Define hippocampus
Storage of new memories.
