indication of live influenza vaccine
treat against flu A and B (2 strains)
route of live flu vaccine
intranasal
contraindications of live flu vaccine
c/i: asthma, reactive airway, pulm disorders, diabetes, renal dys, immunocompromised, younger than 2, GBS, pregnant, egg allergy
inactivated flu vaccine indications
flu- duration of immunity 6 mon-1 year
contraindications of inactived flu vaccine
egg products, active neuro condition, GBS, acute febrile illness
MMR vaccine indications
live vaccine, childhood series, 2 doses, 1 month apart SQ
precautions and contraindications of MMR
shouldnt receive if patient is sick, caution with immunocompromised, pregnant patients, people recently received blood products
indications of rotavirus vaccine
leading cause of gastroenteritis worldwine- active immunity against 5 strains
precautions/adverse reactions rotovirus vaccine
Adverse drug reactions: intussusception, GI symptoms
C/I: actively ill (febrile), infants, immunocompromised
indications for varicella vaccine
live vaccine, 2 dose regimen (pre and post exposure use)
varicella vaccine precautions & contraindications
c/i: neomycin, gelatin hypersensitivity, high dose steriods, pregnant women
risks: immunocompromised, currently sick
indications for diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis (DTaP)
prevention of these diseases (preemptively), 4 doses (lasts 10 years)
precautions/contraindications DTaP
precautions: previous very high temp or shock like state to previous doses, can be given to immunocompromised patient
c/i: anaphlyactic rxn to previous doses c/ encephalopathy, GBS, Arthus rxn, progressive neuro disorder
indications of hep B (HBV)
3 doses, first one given at birth (IM), may need revaccinaqtion if serum levels low
precautions/contraindication to HBV
c/i: hypersensitivity to yeast, moderate/severe illness
precaution: immunosuppressive pts may require larger dose
indication for HPV vaccine
protections against high risk HPVs- develop cervical cancer, given for people aged 9-26 yrs old, 2 doses
precautions and contraindications HPV vaccine
contraindications: severe ax reaction to meds, not for pregnant people
precautions: syncopal event
indications of pneumococcal vaccine
prevention of 7 most common strains– complex dosing, 2 different kinds, should be given before splenectomy, organ transplant, immunosuppressive therapy or chemo
precautions/contraindications of pneumococcal vaccine
precautions: h/o ITP
c/i: anaphylaxis, moderate/severe illness
indications for meningococcal disease
protects against 3 strains after about 10 days, routine vax for young adolescents, revax for travel and high risk people (college students, military, etc)
precautions & c/i for meningococcal vax
c/i: previous anaphylactic reaction to vaccine or any diphtheria/tentanus vaccine
precautions: defer d/t mild/moderate illness
types of poliovirus vaccine
two types: live and inactivated
indications for IPV
prevention of polio, two doses, great for immunosuppressed patients, childhood/baby series
contraindications for IPV (inactivated)
c/i: hypersensitivity reaction or neomycin, streptomycin or polymyxin B hypersensitivity
is OPV still used?
not in US, but in other countries (live vaccine)
indication of zoster vaccine (inactive)
prevention of herpes zoster, can cause neuralgia– routine for all adults 50 and older, but immunosuppressed can receive it younger (18 and up)
precautions/contraindications of zoster vaccine
c/i: severe allergic reaction to vaccine or previous dose, should not have acute episode currently
rabies vaccine indication
used for pre-exposure or post-exposure, pre-exposure for high risk groups (vets, animal handlers, etc)
