Empathy as a counsellor
The counsellor objectively experiences the client’s perspective

Things that interfere with empathy

Conditions for constructive personality change to occur (Rogers, C. R., 2007)
- Two persons are in psychological contact (minimal relationship exists)
- Client is in a state of incongruence, being vulnerable or anxious (the client’s expressed problem is incongruent with the actual problem?)
- Therapist is congruent, genuine, integrated person - is expressing the most true version of themselves
- Therapist experiences unconditional positive regard for client
- Therapist experiences empathetic & accurate understand of client’s awareness of their own experience
- The client perceives empathetic understanding & unconditional positive regard from the therapist
