In 1962, Charles Cooley said:
“How we see ourselves comes from our interpretation of how others see or react to us.”

This occurs when we compare ourselves with someone who is better off.

The social self is influenced by: others’ perception of us, comparison, groups, and audience.
What strategies do individuals use to rebuild their self-esteems?
(1) redefine, (2) distancing, (3) improvement
This is an influence to the social self that aims to create a positive self-image in order to increase social status.
