What is the Internet?
A connection between computers in networks.
- Computers that have access to the internet have the ability to send and receive all kinds of information such as e-mail, video, graphics, messages, and computer programs.
- Started with a project called Advanced Research Projects Agency Network (ARPANET) in the late 1950s for the US Department of Defence.
What is The Web?
- Acronym for World Wide Web (WWW)
- An information space where the documents and other web resources can be accessed via the internet.
WWW was invented by an English computer scientist named Tim Berners-Lee in 1989 at European Laboratory for Particle Physics in Switzerland.
- Designed to facilitate automated information-sharing between scientists in universities and institutes around the world.
What is the difference between the Internet and the Web?
Internet - network infrastructure connects and allows communication between millions of computers globally.
Web - a way of accessing information over the internet.
What is required to access the Internet?
- Connection to the Internet Service Provider.
- Browsers.
What is an Internet Service Provider?
- A company that provides internet services, including personal and business free or with a certain amount of fee.
Eg; TIME broadband, P1, ™ Net, Celcom, Maxis, and Digi.
What is a Web Browser?
- Programs that provide access to web resources.
- Programs for the users to locate, retrieve and display content on the web.
- The two most popular browsers are Chrome and Firefox.
Other major browsers include IE/Edge, Safari, and Opera.
What is a Uniform Resource Locator (URL) and what does it comprise of?
- Location or address of the resources on the web.
- URL consists of several parts
- > The protocol
- > The domain name where the resource is located.
- > The top-level domain name that identifies the type of organization.
What are web utilities and what are some examples?
- Specialised utility programs that make your surfing experience easier and safer.
1) Plug-ins - programs that automatically start and operate as part of a browser.
-> Adds a specific feature to an existing computer program.
Eg. Adobe Flash Player, QuickTime Player, Java Plug-in.
2) Web Filters - programs that can screen an incoming Web page to determine whether some or all of it should not be displayed to the user.
-> Allows an enterprise or an individual user to block pages of certain web page content according to their preferences, such as push advertising, obscene content, viruses.
-> Checks the origin or content of a Web page against a set of rules provided by the company or person who has installed the Web filter.
Eg. Qustodio, Net Nanny, and Surfie.
What are some methods of communication?
- Most popular activity on the internet.
- Methods of communication - email, messaging, social networking, blogs, microblogs, webcasts, etc.
What are the components of an email?
Addresses - unique identifier for an email account.
-> Have two basic parts - the user’s name and the domain name; it includes the top-level domain.
Type of recipients
- To: people required to take action
- Cc (carbon copy): kept informed of the content, but no actions were required from them.
- Bcc (blind carbon copy): Receive the message without any of the other recipients knowing. Used for larger mailings.
What are the different types of email?
- Email clients; an application that runs on your own personal computer and uses a client-server architecture. (Microsoft Outlook)
- Webmail; web-based email accounts that operate from a website, allows users to access their email accounts as long as they have an internet connection. (Gmail, Hotmal and Yahoo mail)
What are spam emails?
Email spam - a type of electronic spam where unsolicited messages are sent by email.
Also known as junk email.
- Used by an organization or a company commercially to promote their applications, products, or services.
Could harm the email account owner by carrying disguise message which might contain viruses, phishing link, and trojan horse.
What is social media as well as Artificial Intelligent Powered Social Media?
Social Media - one form of electronic communication that facilitates the online communities to share information, ideas, personal messages, and other content. (Facebook, Instagram, Youtube)
Artificial Intelligence-Powered Social Media
- AI facilitates sharing information, thoughts, and ideas and gives users quick access to social media content.
Examples of AI in social media are:
- > Machine learning to recognise your face in photos on Facebook and Instagram.
- > LinkedIn uses AI to offer job recommendations.
- > Snapchat takes advantage of the computer vision to track users features.
What are some features of social media?
- Allows you to connect with other people of similar interests and backgrounds. (Facebook, Google+, and LinkedIn)
- Allows you to upload and share various media such as pictures and videos. Most services have additional social features such as profiles, commenting, etc. (Facebook, Twitter have great video and image sharing capabilities)
- Allows you to save, organise and manage links to various websites and resources around the internet. (Twitter, Pinterest, Flipboard)
- Allows users to communicate through online chat. (Instant messaging - Facebook Messenger.)
- Involves buying and selling activities by utilizing the use of social media (S-commerce - Lazada, Shopee)
What is Internet Searching and the Search Engine?
Internet Searching - the process of exploring the Internet for information with the use of a search engine.
Search engine - a software system that is designed to search for information on the World Wide Web.
