A

A connection between computers in networks.

  • Computers that have access to the internet have the ability to send and receive all kinds of information such as e-mail, video, graphics, messages, and computer programs.
  • Started with a project called Advanced Research Projects Agency Network (ARPANET) in the late 1950s for the US Department of Defence.

A
  • Acronym for World Wide Web (WWW)
  • An information space where the documents and other web resources can be accessed via the internet.

WWW was invented by an English computer scientist named Tim Berners-Lee in 1989 at European Laboratory for Particle Physics in Switzerland.
- Designed to facilitate automated information-sharing between scientists in universities and institutes around the world.

A
  • Programs that provide access to web resources.
  • Programs for the users to locate, retrieve and display content on the web.
  • The two most popular browsers are Chrome and Firefox.

Other major browsers include IE/Edge, Safari, and Opera.

  • Specialised utility programs that make your surfing experience easier and safer.

1) Plug-ins - programs that automatically start and operate as part of a browser.
-> Adds a specific feature to an existing computer program.
Eg. Adobe Flash Player, QuickTime Player, Java Plug-in.

2) Web Filters - programs that can screen an incoming Web page to determine whether some or all of it should not be displayed to the user.
-> Allows an enterprise or an individual user to block pages of certain web page content according to their preferences, such as push advertising, obscene content, viruses.
-> Checks the origin or content of a Web page against a set of rules provided by the company or person who has installed the Web filter.
Eg. Qustodio, Net Nanny, and Surfie.

A

Addresses - unique identifier for an email account.
-> Have two basic parts - the user’s name and the domain name; it includes the top-level domain.

Type of recipients

  • To: people required to take action
  • Cc (carbon copy): kept informed of the content, but no actions were required from them.
  • Bcc (blind carbon copy): Receive the message without any of the other recipients knowing. Used for larger mailings.

Also known as junk email.

  • Used by an organization or a company commercially to promote their applications, products, or services.
    Could harm the email account owner by carrying disguise message which might contain viruses, phishing link, and trojan horse.

Social Media - one form of electronic communication that facilitates the online communities to share information, ideas, personal messages, and other content. (Facebook, Instagram, Youtube)

Artificial Intelligence-Powered Social Media
- AI facilitates sharing information, thoughts, and ideas and gives users quick access to social media content.

Examples of AI in social media are:

  • > Machine learning to recognise your face in photos on Facebook and Instagram.
  • > LinkedIn uses AI to offer job recommendations.
  • > Snapchat takes advantage of the computer vision to track users features.

Boolean searching is an important tool that can be used when searching catalogs, indexes, online databases, and the web.

What is the Boolean Search String and what are some of the operators?

  • Enables users to look for more specific results from an online database.

Search string operators:

  • > AND - to combine or exclude keywords in a search, resulting in more focused and productive results. (IIUM AND library)
  • > OR - broadens a search; tells the database that any of the words it connects are acceptable. Helpful searching for synonyms. (biometric OR IRIS OR thumbprint OR “voice recognition”.
  • > NOT - to eliminate documents which contain the term after NOT. (“Software engineering” NOT development)
  • > “….” - quotation mark searching for a specific word combination or an exact phrase. (“data science” “artifical intelligence”)
  • > (….) - brackets are used to group terms together, so that operators like AND can be applied to all the terms in the brackets. (biometric OR IRIS OR thumbprint OR “voice recognition”) AND (authentication OR verification OR validation)

  • Also known as e-business or e-tail.

  • Limited customer service at some area due to limited resources, high delivery cost or geographical restraints.
  • User may suffer loss of privacy, the loss of regions; and countries’ cultural and economic identity.
  • Lack of legislation that adequately regulates the new e-commerce activities, both nationally and intentionally.

What are some payment options that you can use when making online transactions?

A

1) E-Wallet
- An online account that requires to be deposited with an amount of money.
- Once registered to e-wallet provider, the user can make payments faster and with less typing.
- Eg. Touch ‘n Go, Boost, GrabPay.

2) Credit Card
- Payment card, which requires the commitment of the credit card holder to pay for the amount merchandise or server, charged to their card with the additional of other agreed charges to the card issuer.
- Facilities provided by the bank to their customer to ease the customers’ for online payment in the form of debt.

3) Debit Card / Direct Debit
- A payment card needs the cardholder to have certain amount of money in order to commit with the payment. Money comes directly from the user’s bank account when performing a transaction.
