Communication Centre/Nursing Station
The communication epicenter of a hospital unit, HUC is typically stationed here but may share the area with clinical resource/charge nurse and other staff
Medication/Med Room
All stock and patient-specific medication is securely stored, prepared, and dispensed.
Clean Utility Room
storing frequently used supplies for that unit. Typically the supplies are displayed on large mobile carts with areas labelled for each type of supply.
Dirty utility Room
area where used supplies and equipment are stored. Used linen may also be stored here or in separate dirty linen containers throughout the unit.
Conference Room
used for team conferences, family or staff meetings and may also be used where the nursing staff give their taped or verbal reports at shift change.
treatment room
Designed for performing a variety of minor medical procedures and treatments common to the specific needs of the unit and the type of care provided.
Kitchenette
most units have a small kitchen area which includes an ice machine, refrigerator, kettle, microwave and sink as well as disposable cutlery, plates and glasses. Area is typically stocked with light refreshments to provide nutrition to patients outside of their regular meal time hours.
Wait Room
some units have dedicated family wait are or patient longe families and patients may visit.
Dictation Room/Charting Area
typically adjoins the communication center and prvoides physicians with a confidential area to dictate notes through voice recognition and nursing and allied staff a place to complete their required patient charting.
Storage Room
may hold common items such as mobility devices, extra stretchers and bed attachments
Housekeeping Area
area where housekeeping/environmental staff keep their cleaning supplies, may also include a computer to keep track of pending discharges and what rooms need to be cleaned
pneumatic tube system
system used for swiftly moving materials such as specimens, paperwork, and pharmaceutical supplies between hospital departments through a system of tunnels built into the hospital architecture. (think RCSS)
Lift System
Sometimes called “dumbwaiters” mini elevators for sending small objects through the hospital. NEVER CHARTS
Shredders
locked boxes that are taken off-site to be destroyed by a company that specializes in patient record disposal.
