Week 3 - Proteins Flashcards
1
Q
Functions of proteins
A
- Structural - provides structural framework of various body parts
- Regulatory- acts as hormone receptors, messengers and gene regulators
- Contractile- allow for shortening of muscles to produce motion
- Immunological - antibodies aid responses that protect against foreign and invading substances
- Catalytic - acts as enzymes to regulate biochemical responses.
- Transport
2
Q
Simple diffusion
A
Movement of small hydrophobic molecules from high concentration to low concentration across the phospholipid bilayer.
3
Q
Osmosis
A
Movement of water molecules across a semipermeable membrane from high solvent to low solvent.
4
Q
Phagocytosis
A
Referred to as cellular eating. The cells take in large pieces of solid material and the cell membrane pinches off to form a vesicles that travels in the cytoplasm. It is used to digest bacteria and dead cells.
5
Q
Pinocytosis
A
Known as cellular drinking. Cells take in smaller material. A vesicle forms around extra cellular fluid and dissolves solutes.
