Week 3 - Proteins Flashcards

1
Q

Functions of proteins

A
  1. Structural - provides structural framework of various body parts
  2. Regulatory- acts as hormone receptors, messengers and gene regulators
  3. Contractile- allow for shortening of muscles to produce motion
  4. Immunological - antibodies aid responses that protect against foreign and invading substances
  5. Catalytic - acts as enzymes to regulate biochemical responses.
  6. Transport

Q

Phagocytosis

A

Referred to as cellular eating. The cells take in large pieces of solid material and the cell membrane pinches off to form a vesicles that travels in the cytoplasm. It is used to digest bacteria and dead cells.

A

Known as cellular drinking. Cells take in smaller material. A vesicle forms around extra cellular fluid and dissolves solutes.
