Week 3: Object and scene perception Flashcards

1
Q

Perception

A
  • information from receptors → feature Analysis (detection) → Interpretation →
→ Identification (recognition) & Significance based on Memory
  • Interpretation happens automatically
  • Individual difference in “significance”
  • “Significance” is determined based on person’s previous experiences
  • Perception is limited by previous experiences (knowledge) of individuals
  • Perception is also influenced by emotions, motives and expectations
→ That is why “Every individual can have different opinions”

Q

Perceptual organization

A
  • The process of analyzing, integration or organizing of incoming information
  • Scene is a continuous array of light intensity values → needs to extract a
    meaningful entities & objects
  • Local differences in orientation or spatial frequency are harder to compute
→ require higher order comparisons between the feature-selective responses of different
    populations of neurons
→ early cortical visual areas. → area V1.
