Week 3 Newton's Laws Flashcards
what are the two types of forces
contact forces
long range/ non contact forces
define Newton’s first law
Every object continues in its state of rest or uniform motion in a straight line unless acted upon by a resultant force
what is inertia
resistance of an object to a change in its state of motion
what is used to quantify inertia
mass
how do you test if you are in an inertial reference frame and what is the result if you are in an inertial frame
release an object so that it becomes an isolated body.
If it floats you are in an inertial frame
define Newton’s second law
the acceleration of an object is directly proportional to the resultant force acting on it. It is also inversely proportional to its mass. The direction of the acceleration is in the direction of the resultant force
what is the equation most commonly associated with Newton’s second law
F = ma
define Newton’s third law
If a body exert a force on another then the other body will exert a force of the same type, equal magnitude and opposite direction on the original body
