Week 3 Micro lecture 2 (Viruses) Flashcards
Genetic material and example of a class I virus?
DS DNA
Herpesvirus
Genetic material and example of a class II virus?
SS DNA
Parvovirus
Genetic material and example of a class III virus?
DS RNA
Reovirus
Genetic material and example of a class IV virus?
SS RNA (+) Picornavirus (Poliovirus)
Genetic material and example of a class V virus?
SS RNA (-) Orthomyxovirus (Influenza)
Genetic material and example of a class VI virus?
SS RNA (+) retrovirus (HIV)
Genetic material and example of a class VII virus?
DS DNA (Codes for template RNA that is then reverse transcripted back to DNA) Hepadna virus (Hep B)
What does transformation of virus refer to?
Virus transforms host cell to a tumor cell
Ex. HPV
What is temperate virus?
Capable of lysogeny prior to lysis
Ex. Herpes
Latent infection
Virus = lysogeny
Example of persistent infection
HIV - no lysis stage
How does class IV virus transmit genetic material?
Starts with (+) RNA. This is translated by host into proteins which include RdRp capable of synthesizing (-) RNA to serve as a template strand for synthesis of many (+) RNA strands.
How does class V virus transmit genetic material?
Starts with (-) RNA as well as viral RdRp from capsid transmitted in host. (+) RNA strand is synthesized by RdRp to make template strand for more (-) RNA.
