Week 3 - Managing Qualitative Data Flashcards
What do we have to complete to understand the meaning of our qualitative data
Thematic analysis - find the themes of the data
What is a thematic analysis
A simplistic and systematic way of identifying and exploring themes that are interpretable from a dataset
Which is thematic analysis the most commonly used qualitative method
Due to it being theoretically flexible- this methodology can be used alongside several different theoretical perspectives
What are themes
Common patterns within data
Who made the six step process for thematic analysis
Braun and Clarke 2006
What is the first step of B and Cs model
Familiarising yourself with the data
Reading and re reading the data
What is the second step of b and cs model
Generating initial codes
Coding interesting feature of data in systematic fashion across data set, collating data relevant to each code
What is step 3 of b and cs model
Searching for themes
Collating codes into potential themes, gathering all data relevant to each potential theme
What is the 4th step of b and cs model
Reviewing themes
Checking if the theme works in relation to the codes extracts and entire data sets, generating a thematic analysis of the map
What is step 5 of b and cs model
Defining and naming themes
Refine specifics of each theme, generate clear definitions and name for each theme
What is step 6 of b and cs model
Producing the final report
what is rigour
Any method the researcher undertakes to enhance the quality and trustworthiness of their qualitative findings
What is one way of improving rigour in research methodology
Group peer reviews
How does external audits improve rigour in a study
Having a researcher who is not involved in the research process examine both the process and product of the research study
How does member checking improve rigour in a study
Asking a participant to provide feedback on the researchers conclusions to see if they agree
