Week 3 - CHD Flashcards
1
Q
How do nitro-vasodilators work?
A
-produce NO (nitric oxide) which increases cGMP (in muscle cells) –> muscle relaxes/dilates
2
Q
What is the most common vasodilator (nitrate)?
A
GTN
-sublingual tablet, spray, transdermal patch
3
Q
Where does GTN work?
A
Nitrovasodilators dilate both arteries and veins
4
Q
What are common unwanted effects of nitrovasodilators?
A
- throbbing headache - cerebral vasodilation
- dizziness - esp. on getting up = low BP
Caution with:
- other drugs that lower BP
- other drugs acting on NO pathway - e.g. Sildenafil
5
Q
What is the mechanism of action of lipid lowering drugs (statins)?
A
HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors but may work via other mechanisms
HMG-CoA is involved in cholesterol synthesis
6
Q
What are the side effects of lipid-lowering drugs (statins)?
A
- GI upset (usually wears off)
- abnormal liver tests (usually mild)
- muscle problems (myopathy - rare but serious)
7
Q
Where does the pain from angina result from?
A
Cardiac ischaemia
