Week 3 Chapter 3 Flashcards
What are the three basic steps in a computer’s operation?
Input: Data is provided.
Process: Data is processed by the CPU.
Output: Processed data is delivered.
What does the Control Unit (CU) do in a computer?
The CU is responsible for the functioning and direction of the computer.
Name an example of an input device.
Mouse, Keyboard, Microphone, Scanner, Webcam.
Name an example of an output device.
Monitor, Printer, Speakers.
What is the difference between input and output devices?
Input devices take data from users, while output devices display or present processed data.
What is hardware?
Hardware refers to the physical components of the computer, like the monitor, keyboard, CPU, etc.
What is software?
Software refers to the programs and instructions that tell the computer how to perform tasks.
What is the difference between system software and application software?
System Software: Manages the computer’s operations and provides a platform for other software.
Application Software: Helps users perform specific tasks (e.g., web browsing, gaming).
What does RAM do in a computer?
RAM temporarily stores data and instructions for the CPU to access quickly.
What is the role of the operating system (OS)?
The OS manages the computer’s resources and acts as an interface between the user and the hardware.
What is the difference between RAM and ROM?
RAM: Temporary memory used by the CPU.
ROM: Permanent, non-volatile memory that stores critical instructions.
What is the difference between a 32-bit OS and a 64-bit OS?
32-bit OS: Can access up to 4 GB of RAM.
64-bit OS: Can handle more than 4 GB of RAM.
What is the motherboard?
The motherboard is the central circuit board that connects all the main components of the computer, including the CPU, RAM, and other devices.
