Week 3 Biochem Flashcards

1
Q

List the 4 Cardiac BioMarkers of the past and why they aren’t used any more:

A
  1. Creatine Kinase
  2. Lactate Dehydrogenase
  3. Aspartate Aminotransferase (AST)
  4. Myoglobin
    Because they are non-specific markers.

Q

How can a possible MI be differentiated from Angina in diagnosis?

A

Angina, though it is defined as poor blood flow to the heart, presents with normal cTn levels. In the case of an MI, cTn levels would increase by at least 12 hrs.

Q

How can you differentiate between an MI or non-MI case when elevated CK-MB land Troponin levels are detected?

A

Non-MI cases will present elevated CK-MB, but it won’t exhibit the normal rise, peak, and decline that you would see in an MI. Similarly, Troponin will exhibit a rise but not a peak.
