south carolina constution
restricted the suffrage to believers in god and a future state of rewards and punishment
a senator had to be a free white male and a protestant, thirty years old, and a state resident for five years, and have an estate of at least £2,000 free of debt in the district. (non residents could also represent a district if they owned property in the district worth £7,000.)
a house member had to be a protestant, at least twenty-one years old, a state resident for three years, and own an estate of at least five hundred acres and twenty slaves or other property of at least £1,000 free of debt. (non residents could sit in the house if they owned property in the district free of debt worth £3,500.)
anglican church was disestablished, and the upper house became the popularly elected s.c. senate. the representation imbalance in the legislature was adjusted so that the upcountry share approached 40%
