Week 3 Airflow limitation COPD (Full on Quizzlet) Flashcards
Signs and symptoms of COPD
Cough + sputum
Dyspnoea
Decreased excercise tolerance
Chest tightness/wheeze
Has extrapulmonary features:
Respiratory pathophysiology of COPD
** edit with this weeks slides and week 1 slides
Limitation to airflow >Air trapping >Hyperinflation
Limitation to expiratory flow has 2 components REVERSIBLE: Mucus Bronchospasm Inflammation
IRREVERSIBLE:
Floppy airways due to loss of elastic recoil
Fibrosis
Loss of elastic recoil & breakdown of alveolar walls
AIR TRAPPING
Airways close down on expiration. RV increases.
LUNG HYPERINFLATION
*****
Effects of lung hyperinflation on the diaphragm
& work of breathing
- Decreased curvature of the diaphragm
- Medial orientation of the Diphragmatic fibres
- Horozontal ribs
- Thoracic cage ER directed inwards
Inspiritory mms need to generate Ppl in excess of intrinsic PEEP
t/f indrawing of supraclavicular fossae
Intercostal recession
Expiratory mucles have increased work
Increased WOB > Dyspnoea
