What is a surgical wound?
An intentional cut made to skin during operation usually to treat and underlying health problem
What is a traumatic wound?
A sudden unplanned injury (ranges from a minor grace to life threatening wounds)
What is a chronic wound?
A wound that had been present for 6 weeks or more (can be the result of a non-healing surgical or traumatic wound or a pressure ulcer)
What are the phases of wound healing?
1) Haemostats
2) Inflammation
3) Granulation
4) Epithelialisation
What is primary intention?
When the edges of a wound are brought together e.g. stitches, stapled, glued etc
What is secondary intention?
Edges of wound can’t be brought together e.g. pressure ulcer (wound heals by the 4 phases of wound healing)
What is tertiary intention?
A combination of primary and secondary
What factors of a wound should b looked at?
Pain levels Dimensions Tissue type of wound bed Exudate levels Peri-wound skin Signs of infraction Treatment objectives
Give examples of factors that effect healing
Age, weight, infection, malnutrition/dehydration etc
What is the aseptic non-touch technique?
A method used to prevent contamination of wounds by ensuring only sterile objects and fluids are used in cleaning and dressing the site
