What is amnestic syndrome?
A syndrome associated with chronic prominent loss of recent memory; remote memory is sometimes impaired, while immediate recall is preserved. Disturbances of time sense and ordering of events are usually evident, as are difficulties in learning new material.
What is confabulation?
Confabulation is a disturbance of memory, defined as the production of fabricated, distorted, or misinterpreted memories about oneself or the world, without the conscious intention to deceive.
What is the relevance of confabulation in amnestic syndrome?
Confabulation may be marked but is not invariably present. Other cognitive functions are usually well preserved and amnestic defects are out of proportion to other disturbances
