What are some common theatre superstitions?
Ghostlight, darkday (monday), no whistling, don’t say “Macbeth”, don’t wear blue onstage without silver, don’t say “good luck”, don’t give flowers before performance, don’t practice curtain call until the end, no mirrors onstage
What is the difference between theatre and drama?
Theatre- what’s seen, visual aspects. Drama- what’s said, “dran” (to do)
What is the purpose of theatre?
to educate and entertain
What is the Horacian Dictum
“deulce et utile”; theatre should be sweet and useful
What is a play?
basic unit of theatre, action/event, “dran”= to do
What is a playwright?
“wright”= someone who creates, comes up with a vision
Where does theatre lie on the spectrum of film and prose?
in the middle becuase it incorporates elements of both that must exist for theatre to be present
How are plays classified?
Duration and Genre
What are the different durations of plays?
full length (2-4 hours; 3 - 5 acts (classical)); one acts; 10mins
What are some examples of genre?
tragedy, comedy, mystery, science fiction, melodrama, documentary, historical, dark comedy, dramedy/tragic comedy, farce, children’s theatre
What are some elements of tragedy?
ritual, protagonist vs. larger than life force, antagonist, catharsis - emotional release
What are some elements of comedy?
secular entertainment, release through laughter, common man, exagerration, stock characters, social elements
What are the elements of drama?
