what is cutaneous habronemiasis?
commonly called “summer sores,” is a skin disease in horses caused by the larvae of stomach worms that are deposited on the horse’s skin by flies
what are signs of summer sores in horses?
ulcerative lesions, usually around moist areas like the eyes, genitals, and legs, colic, gastritis
how does a horse get “summer sores”?
by ingesting larvae from flies that have ingested the worms’ egg
what are signs of “equine roundworm”?
unthriftiness and colic
what is the largest equine nematode?
“equine roundworm”
what are “bloodworms” or “redworms”?
strongyles: large and small infect horse
where do small strongyles live?
the large intestine and encyst
how are strongyles transmitted?
eggs in grass, horse eats grass. pasture managemnt.
what type of worm are strongyles?
roundworm
where do large strongyles live?
migrate to liver and cause damage, and the mesenteric arteries of both intestines causing their obstruction
what is equine strongyloides?
horse intestinal threadworm - worst in foals
what are signs of strongyloides?
anemia, wt loss
what is oxyuris equi?
equine pinworm
where does equine pinworm live?
rectum, colon
what is equine lungworm transmitted?
ingestion, migrate to lungs, cough
