Herbs that “release the exterior” (2 subcategories)
- Warm, acrid herbs that release the exterior - dispel wind-cold*
- Cool, acrid herbs that release the exterior - dispel wind-heat*
Wind-Cold / Wind-Heat Sx:
- Simultaneous chills & fever
- Aversion to cold & wind
- Floating pulse
+ Headache, stiff neck, muscle aches…

Sweating = absent or mild
Sore throat
Thirst
Yellow secretions

Gui Zhi - category, properties, channels, dosage:
- Category: Warm, acrid herbs that release the exterior
- Properties: acrid, sweet, warm
- Channels: HT, LU, UB
- Dosage: 3-9g (standard)
HT = cinnamon red hot candies
LU = where ext. attacks go first
UB = part of tai yang division
Gui Zhi - actions & indications:
- RELEASES EXTERIOR & assists yang
- WARMS and unblocks channels/collaterals (releases muscle layer) : for wind-cold-damp painful obstruction
- WARMS YANG & transforms thin mucus
- Assists HT YANG & unblocks yang qi of chest
- WARMS MIDDLE and directs “turbid yin” downward
Gui Zhi - cautions & contraindications:
- Warm conditions/heat (yin xu etc)… adding heat to heat.
- Pregnancy/excessive menstruation
- Large overdoses can cause dizziness, eye irritation, cough, thirst, low urine output
+ rare allergic reactions

Bò Hé - category, properties, channels, dosage:
- Category: Cool, Acrid Herbs that Release the Exterior
- Properties: acrid, aromatic, cool
- Channels: LUNG, LIVER (green)
- Dosage: 3-6g (low**)
Bò Hé - actions & indications:
- DISPERSES WIND HEAT, clears & benefits head, eyes and throat.
- Vents RASHES
- Allows constrained LIVER QI to flow freely
- Expels “turbid filth” (summerheat gastric disturbance etc)
Bò Hé - cautions & contraindications:
Can DEPLETE QI; should not be used in debilitated patients who sweat profusely or in those with ascendant Liver yang
Herbs that “clear heat, drain fire” (overview):
- Treat HEAT; coldest herbs in Materia Medica: NOT(!) for cold Sx, weak SP/ST, deficiency heat
- General Sx: high fever, irritability, thirst, delirium with febrile disease
- Treat EYE problems due to wind-heat + heat in LV, LU, ST

- Category: Herbs that clear heat, drain fire
- Properties: sweet, acrid, very cold
- Channels: LU, ST
- Dosage: 15-60g (high**)
Shí Gāo - actions & indications:
- CLEARS HEAT, drains fire
- Clears heat from excess from the LUNGS (wheezing w/ fever, thick viscous sputum)
- Clears “blazing” STOMACH FIRE (headache, toothache, or swollen & painful gums)
- For SKIN STUFF: eczema, burns and ulcerated sores (usually topically)
Shí Gāo - cautions & contraindications:
Contraindicated in cases of cold from Sp/St deficiency or fever from yin deficiency
